Burkett Industries is comprised of two divisions. The Burkett Lightning Rod Company is the oldest division having been founded in 1870 by Joel Burkett. The Burkett Lightning Rod Company (BLR) manufactured and installed lightning protection systems.
At one time BLR manufactured everything required for their lightning protection systems using their own foundry and cable machines located in their facility in Fremont, Ohio. Joel Burkett passed the business on to his son, Byron Burkett; the second generation of Burketts to run the company. Byron and his employees manufactured their lightning protection products during the winter months.
The second division of Burkett Industries, which was called Bud Burkett Electric, was formed by Wendell Burkett just prior to World War II. As the name implies, the primary business was residential, agricultural, and commercial electrical wiring. This division became, and still is, the primary business of the company today.
The Burkett Lightning Rod Company and Bud Burkett Electric merged in 1963 and took the name Burkett Industries Inc.
Today, the company is known as Burkett Industries Inc., Electrical Contractors and is headed by Jay Hensley, a fifth-generation Burkett who became President of the company after Dick Burkett, former President and third-generation Burkett, passed the torch on to him. Jay has been with the company since 1982 and currently serves as President of Burkett Industries Inc., Electrical Contractors. A native of Fremont, Ohio, Jay is the fifth generation of the Burkett family to lead the company. He began his career as an auto mechanic and grounds keeper, building a strong foundation in hands-on problem solving and facility maintenance.
Jay carries and maintains the State of Ohio Electrical Contracting License for the company and is also licensed in commercial fire protection and fire alarm installation. Known for his strengths in troubleshooting, planning, and training, Jay’s leadership and dedication to both the company and its customers consistently go above and beyond. Outside of work, he enjoys home renovation projects for family, repairs, fishing and golfing with family, attending his granddaughters’ sporting events, and hosting family cookouts and pool gatherings.
Brock joined the team in 2024 and brings experience in residential, commercial, and data communications work. He is known for his strong organizational skills, attention to cleanliness, personable nature, and clear communication on the job. Brock especially enjoys service work and underground projects, where his strengths really shine. Originally from Clyde, Ohio, Brock values time outdoors and family life. Outside of work, he and his wife Laura, enjoy camping, spending time in nature, and hanging out with their Goldendoodle, Maverick.
Theresa Hensley, Corporate Secretary/Treasurer & Office Manager Theresa has been with the team since March 2014. Before joining, she spent 31 years as an Independent Cosmetologist, building strong skills in communication and customer service. In her current role, Theresa brings strengths in office management, task completion, and supporting projects from start to finish. Originally from Fremont, Ohio, Theresa enjoys spending time with her family, caring for her home, and enriching her faith. She loves to talk, considers everyone a friend, and is known for her warm, approachable nature. She feels blessed by her family—her husband Jay, daughters Erin and Mandy, two sons-in-law (both named Matt!), and three wonderful granddaughters.
Abby joined the team January 2026, and is originally from Fremont. She brings a well-rounded professional background, having worked multiple jobs. Abby is a licensed health insurance agent in the State of Ohio and is known for her strong customer service skills, organization, and attention to detail. As a dependable team player, she thrives in people-focused roles and enjoys helping others. Outside of work, Abby loves spending time with her family and friends. She enjoys traveling, camping, being outdoors, and going on small adventures. She is a proud mother of one and a devoted dog mom to two pups—Blu, a French Bulldog, and Maci, a yellow Labrador Retriever. Abby truly loves being a mother to all of them.
Laura joined Burkett in 2025. She brings both teaching experience and administrative support skills, having previously assisted with office work, for her husband Brock’s, business. Laura is also a first-grade teacher with Sandusky City Schools, where she uses her strengths in organization, communication, and her positive, happy-go-lucky attitude every day. She especially enjoys office work and interacting with customers, always with a focus on supporting the community. Originally from Port Clinton, Ohio, Laura loves spending time outdoors with her family. She and her husband enjoy camping and outdoor activities, especially with their Goldendoodle, Maverick.
Brandon joined our team on June 16, 2025. Brandon brings a strong background in industrial maintenance, with hands-on experience in assembly lines and motor controls. He completed a 4-year apprenticeship and holds an OSHA 10 certification, giving him a solid foundation in safety and technical skills. Brandon especially enjoys troubleshooting automation and process control systems, where he can put his problem-solving skills to work. Outside of work, Brandon is passionate about the creative arts, spending his free time drawing, exploring photography, and other artistic outlets.
Blake joined the team in January 2025 and brings experience in golf course maintenance. He is OSHA 10 certified and trained in First Aid and CPR, with a focus on efficiency, cleanliness, and finding the best ways to perform basic services. On the job, Blake enjoys hands-on work and tasks that allow him to apply his organizational skills and problem-solving mindset. Originally from Fremont, Ohio, Blake spends much of his time outside of work powerlifting and competing with USA Strongman. He also enjoys time with his Yellow Lab.
